Examination of Conscience - Catholic Social Teaching

In most cases, before we go to Confession, we examine our lives through the lens of the 10 Commandments. We can take our preparation a step further and consider how we put our faith into action. Catholic Social Teaching reveals what being Christ’s followers requires of us. Before your next Confession, use the following to help focus on how we live out our faith.

Life and Dignity of the Human Person

  • Do I respect life from conception through natural death?
  • Do I recognize the face of Christ reflected in all others?
  • Am I committed to ensuring that every human being lives in dignity?

Call to Family, Community, and Participation

  • Do I try to make positive contributions in my family and in my community?
  • Do my beliefs, attitudes, and choices strengthen families?
  • Do I stay informed and make my voice heard when needed?

Rights and Responsibilities

  • Do I recognize and respect other’s economic, social, political, and cultural rights?
  • Do I live comfortably but remain insensitive to the needs of others?
  • Do I ensure that the rights of persons in need are met?

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

  • Do I give special attention to the needs of the poor and vulnerable?
  • Am I concerned for my own good at the expense of others?
  • Do I engage in actions that protect the dignity of the poor and vulnerable?

The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

  • As a worker, do I give my employer a fair day’s work for my wages?
  • As an owner, do I treat workers fairly?
  • Do I treat all workers with respect, no matter their position or class?
  • Do I support the rights of all workers to adequate wages, health insurance, vacation and sick leave?

  • Does the way I spend my time reflect a genuine concern for others?
  • Do I lift up vulnerable people throughout the world in my prayer?
  • Am I attentive to my local neighbors as well as those around the globe?
  • Do I see all members of the human family as my brothers and sisters?

Care for God’s Creation

  • Do I live out my responsibility to care for God’s creation?
  • Do I litter? Live wastefully? Use energy too freely?
